Gállogieddi – Sami Open Air Museum in Mark Sami surroundings
Øvermyrnesveien 38, 8534 Liland
The Sami farm is located all the way up the mountain far from the coast, and from the yard you have a fantastic view of the neighbouring villages and the surrounding area. Here you will hear the history about the Sami people who have lived here, and you can see what it was like to live here 200 years ago. The first permanent settlement at Gállogieddi dates from the end of the 18th century, when reindeer herder Jon Nilsen and his family settled here. The area in and around the field settlements was well known to the reindeer-herding Sami who moved every spring from the winter pastures in the Swedish interior (Jukkasjärvi parish) to the summer pastures on the Norwegian coast. Many of the reindeer-herding Sami eventually became permanent residents, and it is this settlement that mainly forms the basis of today’s field settlements. Based on the farm environment, a combination industry was run, where agriculture, fishing, range industries and reindeer husbandry formed a holistic economy. The farmstead consists of an old, traditional bowstag slavvo (bealljegoahti), farmhouse, barn building, firehouse, storehouse, skelterjå, earthen cellar and a collection of old objects and tools. In the farmhouse, you can also see an exhibition of traditional Sami crafts – duodji. Attached to the museum, you will also find a 2 km long cultural trail with Marka Sami cultural relics. The cultural trail is marked, and the track is part of the old road to the mountains. Every summer at the end of July, the  www.markomeannu.no festival is organized at Gállogieddi and if you want to experience a family friendly Sami festival with accommodation at the festival camp we can arrange that too. Please let us know.
